Early Summer Share

The summer CSA starts out lighter with fewer items. Early summer shares include leafy and salad greens, early root crops, spring brassicas like broccoli, cabbage, and kohlrabi, as well as green onions and early garlic. Pictured here is the Week 4 share from 2015: 6 oz. bag of lettuce mix, 1 lb. of broccoli, 1 bunch of green onions, 1 bunch of carrots, 1 lb. snap peas, 1 bunch of beets, 1 head of cabbage, 1 bunch of garlic scapes (flower stalk of garlic plant) and 1 quart of strawberries (fruit share from Berry Patch Farm in Nevada). Mid-Summer Share

As the CSA season progresses, the volume of the CSA increases, as does the diversity of items. New potato harvest begins, as does garlic harvest. Summer crops such as zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes, and green beans begin to appear in July. Pictured here is the Week 8 share from 2014: 1 lb. of green beans, 1 head of green cabbage, 1 head of Chinese (Napa) cabbage, 1 bunch of carrots, 3 cucumbers, 1 bulb of softneck garlic, 1 bunch of Red Russian kale, 1 bunch of Candy onions, 1 1/2 lb. of new potatoes, and 4 zucchini. Late-Summer Share

As the share reaches late summer, tomato season peaks with a variety of tomatoes from large slicers to small sweet cherries. Peppers and eggplants are also abundant. Early season winter squash harvest has begun. Pictured here is the Week 13 share from 2014: 1 lb. of carrots, several globe and Japanese eggplants, 1 head of hardneck garlic, 1 lb. of onions, 3 sweet peppers (green, purple, and red), 3 lb. mix of redskin and fingerling potatoes, 1 pint of cherry tomato medley, 1 pint of juliet (mini-roma) tomatoes, 6 slicing tomatoes, 3 Delicata winter squash, 3 green & yellow zucchini.  CLICK ON THE PICTURE TO SEE THAT WEEK'S NEWSLETTER


Early Fall Share

October 21, 2015

As the summer CSA season draws to a close, the size & weight of the share reaches its peak, with a variety of storage crops such as potatoes, carrots, beets, sweet potatoes, onions, garlic, and more. The last of summer crops like tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and green beans make final appearances while cool season fall crops such as spinach, fall broccoli, and kale come into season. Pictured here is the Week 21 share from 2015: 1/2 lb. of broccoli, 1 bunch of carrots, 1 eggplant, 1 head of softneck garlic, 3/4 lb. of Dragon Tongue green beans, 1 bunch of Winterbor kale, 2 lb. bulk bag of green peppers, 1 quart of Nicola yellow potatoes and 1 quart of Purple Viking potatoes, 1/2 lb. bag of spinach, 3 pounds of sweet potatoes, 1 tomato.
